Use Sweet Orange Oil As A Flavoring

Sweet orange oil has a variety of uses for flavorings, including candy and baked goods.

Sweet orange oil is a citrus-based essential oil with a wide variety of applications including flavoring in foods, lip glosses, massage oils, household cleaners and perfumes. The flavor in essential oils is much stronger than that of extracts. While oils can be substituted for extracts, you will need to use considerably less. In foods the oil is most frequently used to flavor candies; its potency tends to overwhelm other flavors in foods. Additionally, because it is oil-based, it can withstand the high heat needed for candy making.

Instructions

1. Use it in hard candy. Bring sugar, 1/4 cup of water and corn syrup to a boil; cook until it registers at least 300 degrees (or the hard ball stage) on the candy thermometer. Remove from heat and add a few drops of the sweet orange oil. Experiment with the amount of oil you use in subsequent batches. Pour the mixture into candy molds, a baking sheet or other flat surface to harden.

2. Add it to baked goods to add a tangy flavor. With most baking recipes, you'll first mix the dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients such as butter, oil, eggs and water. Add the orange oil with the wet ingredients to make sure it mixes in as well. When making small batches, add only a drop or two. Try orange oil in biscotti, zucchini breads and muffins.

3. Make orange-flavored lip gloss. Melt beeswax and add almond oil and honey until the mixture reaches the consistency you prefer for lip gloss. More almond oil will make it glossier, less will make it more like a lip balm. Add two to five drops of sweet orange oil for flavor. Pour the mixture into small containers and let cool completely before using.
