Make A Horse Birthday Cake

How do I Make a Horse Birthday Cake?

You can create homemade birthday cakes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Baking a themed cake that reflects a hobby, favorite vacation destination or sports team can provide a personalized touch to your loved one's party and will appeal to all ages and groups. For those who love equine racing or riding, you can create horse-shaped cakes with a specialty cake pan or by using a cutout of your own horse design to shape a sheet cake.

Instructions

Baking the Horse Cake

1. Purchase a horse-shaped cake pan online or at a specialty cooking store, or use a large pan to bake a standard sheet cake.

2. Prepare your cake batter. You can either use prepackaged cake mix, or you can make your own batter from scratch.

3. Grease your cake pan to prevent the cake from sticking to the sides and bottom of the pan.

4. Preheat the oven. Fill the cake pan 1/2 to 3/4 full with cake batter while the oven warms up. The batter will rise and expand as the cake bakes.

5. Place the cake in the oven. Set the timer as directed on the cake mix box or as listed in your recipe.

6. Remove the finished cake from the oven. Check to make sure the cake is complete by inserting toothpick in its center. The toothpick should come out clean, without any uncooked batter clinging to it.

7. Place the cake on a rack to cool. Do not attempt to remove the cake from the pan until the pan is no longer hot to the touch.

8. Remove the cake from the pan by turning the pan upside down over the platter and gently tapping the bottom of the pan. Use a knife to scrape between the sides of the pan and the cake if you have difficulty loosening the cake.

Shaping the Sheet Cake

9. Take a pen and trace or draw the desired horse design on piece of cardboard.

10. Cut out the horse design with a pair of scissors.

11. Place the cardboard horse on top of the sheet cake.

12. Use a knife to cut the cake along the outline of the cardboard cutout.

Decorating the Horse Cake

13. Select the decorative colors for your horse, including the icing color for the body, specific features like the eyes, mane, tail and hooves and a color for writing.

14. Ice the cake as desired with the knife. Use icing bags to add detail to your horse with different colored icings. You can also use predesigned sugar pieces.

15. Write a birthday message along the horse's body, and insert candles.
