Soft Amish Pretzel
The Amish are known for many food traditions, one of them being the hand rolled and twisted pretzel. Authentic Amish pretzels come in soft and hard varieties, with or without salt. They can be found in farmer's markets in and around Philadelphia and at markets and restaurants in Lancaster County.
Instructions
1. Start your search for authentic Amish pretzels at Philadelphia's historic Reading Terminal Market. Fisher's Pretzels is one of the many Amish vendors at the market. See young girls roll, twist and dip pretzels, brush melted butter on those that come out of the oven, and do it all with flair and ease. Pretzels come with or without salt. Different mustard selections are available at the stand.
2. Travel to Lancaster County, PA, for an authentic Amish experience. Visit the historic Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery in Lititz, PA--the oldest commercial pretzel bakery in the United States. While in Lancaster County, visit Intercourse Pretzel Factory to have hands-on experience in making pretzels. Visit Harrisburg, the state's capital and go to the Broad Street Market where you'll find Amish pretzel stands
3. If touring Lancaster County, ask the tour guide to stop at a local store or market for fresh pretzels. He will know the best place in the area.
4. Look for local cooking classes that offer instruction on Amish specialties. Some bread baking classes feature pretzel recipes as the dough is similar to bread dough.
5. Look for Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch festivals in the Lancaster County and Kutztown area. There are many festivals in that area each year and you'll undoubtedly find homemade Amish pretzels.
