2. Cut the fondant into strips with a knife or cutter. Make the cuts straight and of uniform size. They should be about 1/2-inch wide.

3. Start with a vertical strip of the fondant, and lay it on the cake in the appropriate area. Measure the size that it needs to be and cut the remaining strips to fit.

4. Starting at the bottom of the vertical strip, lay one strip of fondant horizontally on top of it, overlapping slightly on the left of the vertical strip and trailing out a few inches to the right of the vertical strip.

5. Add another horizontal strip of fondant in the middle of the vertical strip and then another at the very top. Lay them the exact same way and distance on either side as the first horizontal strip.

6. Continue the pattern with another vertical strip of fondant on the right ends of the horizontal strips. This time lay the vertical strip on top of the right ends of the horizontal strips.

7. Place two strips of fondant horizontally to fit between the other strips of horizontal fondant. Now you can start the pattern over again at the right edges.
