Make Sopapillas

Sopapillas are a fried pastry dessert. The dish is a sweet quick bread that is very easy to make and tastes delicious. Sopapillas are often served at Mexican restaurants, but the quick bread is enjoyed in Central America, South America, and the Southern United States. Traditionally, the sopapillas are fried, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, then drizzled with honey. For a savory alternative, stuff sopapillas with black or pinto beans and green chiles.

Instructions

1. Pour the warm water and yeast together in a small bowl and stir. Set the mixture aside for 5 minutes while the yeast dissolves.

2. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. Once the 5 minutes are up, mix the butter and 1 tbsp. sugar to the yeast.

3. Add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture slowly. Knead the dough together until smooth.

4. Cover with a towel and let the dough rise for an hour. Punch the dough down once it rises and roll it out to ¼-inch thick.

5. Slice 3-inch squares out of the dough, then slice the squares in half to form triangles.

6. Fill the fryer with 1 to 2 inches of oil and bring to 375 degrees.

7. Add three or four triangles to the fryer at a time; fry for 1 minute, then flip the triangles over and fry for 1 more minute.

8. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a small bowl.

9. Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over the cooked sopapillas and drizzle honey over the top of the fried bread.
