What Are Lobster Rolls

A lobster roll is the official sandwich of the state of Maine.

Lobster rolls are the official sandwich of the state of Maine. The sandwiches are popular in states in New England as well as Eastern Long Island because of the lobster fishing that commonly occurs there. Lobster rolls are also popular in the Maritime provinces in Canada. The sandwich originated in 1912, but grew in popularity in the 1970's as it offered a sandwich in the style of a hot dog that featured succulent lobster meat.

What Is A Lobster Roll?

A lobster roll features the fresh cooked meat of a lobster mixed with mayonnaise. It can also contain celery, scallion, and drawn butter. It is served on a grilled hot dog roll or similar type of sandwich roll. The opening of the sandwich is on the top instead of the typical side. The sandwich often is featured along with lettuce as well as lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Side dishes including french fries, potato chips, and cole slaw are served with a lobster roll.

Maine Lobster Roll

A Maine lobster roll has several distinct characteristics. The roll is a regular hot dog bun that has been buttered on the outside and lightly grilled. The lobster meat is served cold on the roll. The lobster meat is usually from the knuckle, claw, or tail. There can be a mayonnaise spread on the roll as well.

Connecticut Lobster Roll

A Connecticut lobster roll was introduced in the 1930's as a variation to the Maine lobster roll. This lobster roll is similar to the Maine lobster roll although it features warm lobster that is fresh from the shell and marinated in butter. This style of lobster roll is most often found in Connecticut.

Maritime Lobster Roll

The Maritime provinces in Canada, specifically Nova Scotia, also have variations on the lobster roll. Canadian lobster rolls can be served on a hamburger bun, baguette, or pita pocket. These lobster rolls often appear in Canadian Maritime McDonald's fast food restaurants.
