Support For Climbing Bean Container Gardening

Climbing beans need extra support.

Although a properly implemented container garden circumvents many of the challenges of vegetable gardening, climbing beans still need support. Which kind of support is best depends on the container you use.

Maypole

A maypole is the simplest support method for climbing beans. It consisting of a pole and a string planted next to each sprouting plant. Run a string from the top of the pole to the soil in your container. Wrap the sprout around the bottom of the string, and it will climb on its own as it grows.

Trellis

You can position a length of garden trellis next to your beans. As the bean sprouts grow, guide them by weaving them through the lower levels of the trellis. This method works well for raised beds, although you can use trellis behind containers effectively.

Wigwam

Insert several poles of the same length into the soil of the container. Bend all the poles so they meet together and the top and tie them, forming a dome or tent above the garden container. Wind sprouts around the poles; as they climb, the bean sprouts will form an attractive tent shape.
