How Do You Keep Cheese Fresh In A Fridge

Maintain the freshness of your cheese through proper refrigeration.

Cheese is sold from a refrigerated dairy case for a reason. The ideal temperature for its storage is between 35 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the same ranges as ideal refrigerator temperatures. Once opened, the texture of the cheese determines its shelf life. Soft cheeses remain fresh for up to one week, and hard cheeses stay edible for up to one month. Though the cheese has been sold wrapped in plastic, this is not the best storage wrapper for freshness. As soon as you bring home the cheese, rewrap it for proper refrigeration storage.

Instructions

1. Remove the original plastic wrapping and discard.

2. Wrap wax paper tightly around the cheese so the wax comes in direct contact with all of the cheese surfaces. Put a second layer of wax paper around stinky cheeses such as Limburger.

3. Wrap plastic wrap around the wax paper to hold it in place.

4. Place the cheese in the back of the refrigerator, away from the door, to maintain a stable temperature.

5. Replace the wax paper and plastic wrap every other day with new wrappings to keep the cheese at its freshest.
